The academic job search: a resource
June is a great time to start preparing cover letters and teaching statements. I've developed a resource to support writing those materials.
I have been writing a lot, developing a resource for those on the academic job search. I’ve compiled some of my best tips and approaches for writing cover letters and teaching statements and structured them in a way that is motivational so writing these materials won’t feel so lonely.
Early feedback has been that this guide is more comprehensive than other guides, and specifically highlights aspects of writing that the users hadn’t previously considered. I’ve helped countless graduate students and contingent faculty land their next role, and I’m eager to help you get your perfect job, too. If this doesn’t apply to you, but you know someone who might find this useful, please share it with them.

In this guide, I recommend starting this process in May, June, or July, using an ideal job ad or two from last year to develop a draft of each written document. I recommend this because academic job ads are typically posted in August-January-ish of each year. As you know, that time is busy, and if you’re in a graduate student or temporary faculty position role, you’ll be overwhelmed with teaching, grading, research, and other responsibilities. You can make this time easier on yourself by already have a draft of your cover letter or teaching statement that you can simply adapt or adjust to a new job ad.
This 38-page how-to guide contains tips and strategies for writing documents that are easy to read, with insights into how one might frame a lack of teaching experience. It’s currently on sale for $25, and contains a discount code, so if you want to schedule a consult with me, you can do so at a reduced rate.
